Charles Bulfinch’s stone gatehouses and posts for the grounds of the U.S. Capitol

President Monroe first met Bulfinch in 1817 in Boston, when Bulfinch as chairman of the Boston Selectmen, acted as the President’s host and guide.  Subsequently when Benjamin Latrobe was removed as architect of the U.S. Capitol Building, Monroe had the job offered to Bulfinch.  In addition to his work on the uncompleted building whose wings the British burned in 1814, Bulfinch was responsible for the grounds and perimeter buildings and structures on the grounds.National Mall 7 National Mall 18 National Mall 24 National Mall 27As stated in the plaque on the gatehouse, these structures were moved from Capitol Hill to the National Mall.
